What is Messy Play?
The therapeutic messy play course is a specialised programme designed for professionals working with children aged 3 to 12 who aspire to have a profound impact on mental health & emotional well-being.
This course offers a comprehensive understanding of the transformative power of play as a therapeutic tool. It not only enables practitioners to gain insight into the drivers behind problematic behaviours, but through the privileged position of playing alongside them, we gain insight into their worlds, allowing us to support from an informed space.
Our course goes beyond the fundamentals of play and places a strong emphasis on:
- Understanding the Power of Relationships, specifically diving into the world of attachment theory, recognising patterns, understanding the formation of the self-concept and drivers behind problematic behaviours. This module also allows us to explore strategies that support the underlying needs of the children, bringing about long-term change and security.
- Understanding The Power of Stress, specifically focusing on the impact of stress and trauma upon the developing brain, exploring fear-based responses and adverse childhood experiences (ACES), neuroscience, and strategies that will support calming our systems. Within the module, we also focus on us as therapeutic play leaders, noticing our own attachment patterns and exploring self-care and supervision to support the work we do.
- Understanding the Power of Play, specifically exploring developmental stages, symbolism, theme exploration, practicalities of running the sessions, and skills practice all based upon non-directive play therapy.
Through this comprehensive approach, we aim to equip you with the skills needed to facilitate your own therapeutic messy play groups. You'll gain a profound understanding of the unique emotional needs of each child and their families, ensuring that every child receives the essential emotional support necessary for their thriving development.
This course is particularly beneficial for professionals working with children who may be struggling with issues such as low self-confidence, exposure to domestic violence, past abuse leading to placement in care, attention difficulties, language barriers, or challenges in managing their behaviour and emotions.
